Alejandro "El Potrillo" Fernández ranks among Mexico's foremost global music figures. As the offspring of legendary performer Vicente Fernández, he carved out his identity as a ranchero artist throughout the 1990s. The performer's debut record earned a nomination for Regional Mexican Album of the Year at the 1993 Lo Nuestro Awards. After issuing four additional projects over the next four years, he ventured into Latin pop for the first time via the number-one album Me Estoy Enamorando. His presence on the charts has remained constant ever since, with nine releases reaching the summit of the Latin Pop rankings and eleven others registering on the U.S. Top 200. Entre Tus Brazos from 2000 received a nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the first Latin Grammy Awards. The 2004 chart leader A Corazón Abierto fused time-honored Mexican romantic ballad traditions with contemporary Latin pop arrangements. Dos Mundos arrived in 2009, topped multiple charts, and earned multi-platinum status. Rompiendo Fronteras, released in 2017, merged ranchera elements with Latin pop and reggaeton beats before securing its own multi-platinum certification. In 2020 Fernández delivered Hecho en Mexico as his explicit homecoming to folk traditions, limiting the tracklist to norteño and mariachi selections following twenty years of pop explorations; the set debuted at number one on both the Latin Albums and Mexican Regional charts while peaking at 65 on the Top 200.
Fernández entered the world on April 24, 1971, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, as the child of ranchera legend Vicente Fernández, prompting the press to bestow the moniker "El Potrillo" upon him. Starting with his self-titled 1992 debut, he emulated his father's path by specializing in traditional music from the Jalisco region, particularly mariachi. The initial stretch of his discography, encompassing Alejandro Fernandez (1992), Piel de Niña (1993), Grandes Exitos a la Manera de Alejandro Fernandez (1994), Que Seas Muy Feliz (1995), and Muy Dentro de Mi Corazón (1996), all helmed by producer Pedro Ramírez, generated a consistent stream of hit singles. His trajectory reached unprecedented commercial heights with the 1997 arrival of Me Estoy Enamorando. Crafted by Emilio Estefan, Jr. and Kike Santander, the era's leading Latin pop production duo, the project signaled Fernández's decisive shift toward mainstream pop. Beyond claiming the top position on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart, Me Estoy Enamorando yielded four Hot Latin Tracks number ones: "Si Tú Supieras," "En el Jardín" (a collaboration with Gloria Estefan), "No Sé Olvidar," and "Yo Nací Para Amarte." To demonstrate continuity with his origins, Fernández rejoined longtime collaborator Pedro Ramírez in 1999 for the ranchera-focused Mi Verdad before teaming again with Estefan and Santander on the 2000 pop success Entre Tus Brazos. In the years that followed, he maintained a pattern of alternating between ranchera collections (Orígenes, 2001; Niña, Amada Mía, 2003) and Latin pop outings (A Corazón Abierto, 2004; Viento a Favor, 2007), while also issuing live albums (Un Canto de México, 2002; En Vivo: Juntos por Ultima Vez, 2003; México-Madrid: En Directo y Sin Escalas, 2005) and the 2008 greatest-hits package 15 Años de Éxitos.
After fulfilling his seven-album commitment to Sony, Fernández departed the company and aligned with Fonovisa. Sony subsequently attempted to issue a compilation of unreleased material, prompting Fernández to file suit; authorities ultimately confiscated 6,000 copies. In 2009, now under his new label, he unveiled the expansive Dos Mundos endeavor comprising two simultaneous releases, Evolución and Tradición, with the former leaning toward Latin pop and the latter embracing classic ranchera and mariachi styles; both achieved strong chart results, though Evolución performed marginally better on pop listings. The accompanying tour produced the live recording Dos Mundos: Revolución (2010). Fernández resumed studio work in 2012 alongside producer Phil Ramone in Los Angeles. The resulting Confidencias, issued in July 2013, featured joint performances with Christina Aguilera on "Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti," Rod Stewart on "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," and, most poignantly, his father Vicente on "Me Olvidé de Vivir." The album ascended to number one in Mexico and Spain and remained on the charts for more than a year. Continuing his collaborative approach, Fernández enlisted an array of guests for his subsequent project, including Colombian group Morat and Peruvian songwriter Gianmarco. Four compositions came from Joss Favela and two from Mario Dom. Released in 2017, Rompiendo Fronteras adopted a cross-cultural perspective amid prevailing political conditions, presenting rancheras and ballads updated with modern pop production and rhythms; it reached the Top 200 while claiming the top spot on both Latin Pop and Top Latin Albums charts. In 2020 Fernández released Hecho en Mexico, his first album devoted exclusively to mariachi material. Lead single "Caballero" delivered his initial number one on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. "Menti" paired the artist with his father, while "Mas No Puedo" included Christian Nodal. The set entered at number one on the Latin Albums and Mexican Regional charts, marking his seventh chart-topper there and establishing him as the first performer to secure Top Latin Albums number ones across four successive decades—the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s—while also registering at number 65 on the all-genre Top 200.
Following continuous touring throughout 2021 and much of 2022, Fernández unveiled the mariachi single "Inexperto en Olvidarte" on January 6, 2023. The track represented the first occasion he recorded material co-written by two women, Sinaloan songwriters Fernanda Díaz and Amanda Coronel.
