Alfredo De Angelis

Genre: International, South American
Origin: Argentina
Renowned throughout the world as an Argentinian pianist, composer, and orchestra leader, Alfredo de Angelis achieved lasting fame via the performances and recordings of his ensemble across the formative decades of Argentine tango between the 1930s and the 1960s. Unlike fellow bandleaders who interspersed their tangos with elaborately modern compositions, de Angelis adhered strictly to the dance-oriented foundations of the genre, and this steadfast loyalty to classic structures cemented his legendary status. He created or shaped harmonically balanced tangos by deploying rhythm with precision, maintaining unwavering fidelity to melody, and ensuring his vocalists received prominent exposure. Among the hundreds of tracks he documented stand enduring tango standards such as "Al Pie de la Santa Cruz," "La Brisa," "Ya Estamos Iguales" (with Carlos Dante), "Marioneta" (with Floreal Ruiz), and "De Igual a Igual" (with Julio Martel).

Born in 1910 in Adrogué, Buenos Aires, Argentina, de Angelis commenced piano, sight-reading, and harmony lessons prior to turning five. He launched his professional life at fifteen by accompanying vocalist Juan Giliberti at the piano, then accepted an invitation from maestro Anselmo Aieta to serve as pianist in his orchestra. Alongside master bandoneonist Ernesto de la Cruz, he later supported singer Felix Guiterrez across multiple ensembles. Around 1934 he entered Graciano de Leone’s orchestra before moving to the Los Mendocinos orchestra under Francisco Lauro. Singers held de Angelis in high regard as a pianist, frequently enlisting him for live duo appearances and radio broadcasts.

In 1940 de Angelis formed his own orchestras. His ensemble’s debut performance occurred on March 20, 1941 at the Buenos Aires café Marzotto, fronted by vocalist Héctor Morea, and the event proved a resounding triumph. The conductor and his musicians subsequently received an offer to record for the Odeon label, where de Angelis remained until the company ended operations in 1977, releasing 486 sides captured between July 1943 and January 1977.

De Angelis consistently prioritized melody through straightforward rhythmic frameworks. He earned recognition as a premier musical director and conductor of vocal duets, so his most celebrated works spotlighted the blended voices of these pairings, above all the combination of Dante and Martel, widely regarded as the tango era’s finest duo. Martel’s departure from the orchestra in 1951 concluded that celebrated chapter. Later in the decade de Angelis produced several instrumental pieces that likewise marked peaks in his catalog, most prominently "Pavadita," which continues to receive performances in the twenty-first century.

Although he issued or participated in numerous singles and EPs throughout the 1950s, de Angelis attained some of his greatest successes with charting albums such as 1968’s Medalita de la Suerte and 1971’s La Brisa, employing a range of vocalists that included Alberto Cuello, Roberto Mancini, Carlos Aguirre, and Juan Carlos Ostoy.

During the 1980s de Angelis transferred to EMI proper and recorded notable singles including "Esta Noche" with Carlos Boledi and "Tachero de Mi Ciudad" with his daughter Gigi de Angelis in 1980, along with "Argañaraz (Aquellas farras)" with Ruben Linares in 1985.

He issued his final studio album, Asi Es, in 1989. De Angelis died on March 31, 1992, at the age of 82. Since his death, virtually every recording he made—whether leading his own groups or appearing as a piano soloist—has undergone repeated reissues, while numerous high-quality compilations have continued to surface, among them 1997’s Alfredo de Angelis Recordando Exitos Canta Featuring Oscar Larroca, 2001’s Con Sabor a Tango Featuring Juan Carlos Godoy, and 2010’s Alma Tanguera.
