Automatic, the alternative rock band previously operating under the name the Spinouts, consists of bassist Matt Fenton, guitarist Alex Jarvis, bassist Richard Taylor, and drummer Danny Plant, the last of whom replaced Leigh Marlow in the post-grunge lineup. The group forged its singular approach by merging elements from numerous acts, drawing particular inspiration from the Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, and U2 among the 1980s and 1990s outfits.
Matt Fenton and Alex Jarvis first joined forces as the Spinouts in 1987 while freshmen at Queenscliff High School in Victoria, Australia. Early professional appearances were limited to school social functions and beach parties. Several future members of Magic Dirt and Seaweed Gorillas graduated alongside them. Aiming to find wider acceptance for their pop/rock material, the musicians targeted a move to Melbourne. Seven years later the roster settled on Fenton, Jarvis, Marlow, and Taylor.
Their independently released 1994 debut album Automatic brought immediate success and cultivated a new listenership. The punk rock orientation then earned a contract with Murmur, which issued Sister K as the band’s first release on the label in 1995.
Nick Launay, whose prior credits include PiL, the Idiot Box soundtrack, Slits, and Silverchair, guided the harder, louder direction heard on the 1997 sophomore album Transmitter, a shift that proved advantageous. Among the record’s notable rock tracks are “Blown,” “Does She Kiss Like You?,” “What If...,” and “Girl with a Million Minds.” The band members credit their accomplishments to the wide stylistic range of their material, which extends from hard rock to dance music.
