Claire Ritter

Genre: Jazz, Jazz Instrument, Piano Jazz
Claire Ritter came into the world in 1952 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and grew up amid the countryside of Weddington on a horse farm. Athleticism and equestrian activities came naturally to her, yet the piano exerted an equally strong pull that gradually became dominant. During her public-school years she worked with Marlene Broome; as a teenager she also studied with the Charlotte-based jazz pianist and arranger Ziggy Hurwitz. At Sun Valley High School outside Monroe she earned recognition both as a musician and as a track-and-field standout. She maintained this dual focus at Arizona State University, receiving a B.S. in 1974 while competing in collegiate tennis, softball, soccer, field hockey, and basketball. Returning to Charlotte, she completed a B.A. in music at Queens University in 1978 under the guidance of Anita B. Tritt, then pursued private graduate study with the legendary Mary Lou Williams at Duke University from 1978 to 1980. For the next four years she balanced roles as sports coach and music instructor at the private Charlotte Country Day School.

Ritter next relocated to Boston and collaborated with Ran Blake at the New England Conservatory, remaining connected to Blake until 1997, when she returned once more to Charlotte. During those fifteen years in Boston she became a central figure in the local music community. She launched contemporary songwriting courses at both the New England Conservatory and Queens University and collaborated with musicians including Dave Holland, Houston Person, Ricky Ford, Dominique Eade, Steve Swallow, and Stan Strickland. Ritter founded her own imprint, Zoning Records, which has issued multiple releases. She has appeared in venues across the United States and Canada and has been awarded grants and commissions in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Georgia. Her approach to jazz merges a modern sensibility with classical foundations and a cool, lightly swinging pulse, yet she also commands substantial bop-oriented repertoire and creates original compositions that intersect these varied traditions.
