Genre: Rap, Hardcore Rap, Underground Rap, Southern Rap
Origin: U.S.A
DJ Paul joined forces with his production associate Juicy J to help shift rap’s center of gravity southward after years of East and West Coast dominance. Under their guidance Three 6 Mafia evolved from a Memphis underground act into a nationwide rap powerhouse that captured an Academy Award while generating numerous mid- to late-nineties solo projects for its assorted members. Paul’s beats, like those of his partner, favored ominous atmospheres built on booming bass lines and spectral textures. He also contributes verses as a Three 6 Mafia member and supplies rhymes to most of the projects he helms for Project Pat, Gangsta Boo, La Chat, and Tear da Club Up Thugs. In addition, he stepped into cinema by directing the 2001 straight-to-video feature Choices, which showcased the majority of the Three 6 Mafia roster.

Jordan Houston, known professionally as Juicy J, and Paul Beauregard, known as DJ Paul, began working together at the start of the nineties as Memphis DJs. They quickly moved into beat-making, recruiting local MCs to record over their instrumentals and issuing the results regionally under the Triple 6 Mafia banner; those early recordings later resurfaced as reissues. In 1995 the collective adopted the name Three 6 Mafia and independently issued its debut full-length Mystic Stylez. Strong grassroots sales prompted a distribution arrangement with Relativity via the Hypnotized Minds imprint. Throughout the remainder of the decade the pair oversaw multiple Hypnotized Minds releases each year and leveraged the partnership to expand their reach. By the close of the nineties they had built a broader commercial platform, highlighted by the breakthrough album When the Smoke Clears (2000), which entered Billboard’s album chart at number six.

Paul’s first solo outing, Underground 16: For da Summa, arrived in 2002. Four years later he, Juicy J, and Crunchy Black received the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” featured in the motion picture Hustle & Flow. Following the group’s 2008 album Last 2 Walk, Three 6 Mafia went on hiatus. Paul returned with the solo album Scale-A-Ton in 2009 and then issued A Person of Interest in 2012, a set that fused hip-hop with elements of dance and dubstep. In 2014 he rejoined Lord Infamous, Crunchy Black, Koopsta Knicca, and Gangsta Boo under the Da Mafia 6ix moniker; the unit collaborated with Insane Clown Posse on the album Reindeer Games, released through ICP’s Psychopathic label. One year afterward that same imprint put out Paul’s solo project Master of Evil, which included appearances by Violent J, Yelawolf, and Lil Wyte.
