British multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist Georgia crafts emotionally charged songs that fuse house rhythms, new wave textures, and post-punk edges in unexpected ways. Her 2015 debut album, the grime-tinged electro-pop release titled Georgia, marked her first full-length statement; subsequent work grew more dancefloor-oriented without sacrificing its raw feeling. The follow-up, Seeking Thrills, earned widespread praise upon its 2020 release, peaked at number 24 on the U.K. album chart, and received a Mercury Prize nomination. She later joined forces with Gorillaz, Mura Masa, and William Orbit before teaming with producer Rostam for her third album, Euphoric, which appeared in 2023.
As the daughter of Leftfield’s Neil Barnes, Georgia took up drums in childhood and later pursued ethnomusicology studies at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. Early professional work found her serving as a session drummer for offbeat British pop acts such as Kwes., Micachu, and JUCE. Bolstered by encouragement from those peers, she developed her own material; JUCE’s Cherish Kaya then issued Georgia’s debut EP, Come In, on Kaya Kaya Records in 2014. That record revealed her singular, distinctly British strain of underground pop, evoking the immediate impact M.I.A. and Micachu had made at the start of their careers. Domino signed her later that year and issued the self-titled debut album in August 2015. During the same period she contributed vocals to “Universal Everything” on Leftfield’s third album, Alternative Light Source.
Following a short hiatus she returned with the 2017 single “Feel It,” then issued “Mellow,” featuring Shygirl, and “Started Out” in 2018. Guest appearances that year included albums by Suicideyear and HONNE, while 2019 brought her contribution to Africa Express’s full-length Egoli. The ecstatic dance-pop track “About to Work the Dancefloor” generated strong reviews and heightened excitement ahead of her sophomore effort. Seeking Thrills, an album that channeled euphoria and heartbreak through buoyant house- and techno-inspired arrangements, reached listeners in early 2020 and delivered her first significant chart success while earning a Mercury Prize shortlist.
Subsequent remixes and collaborations involved Jessie Ware, Mura Masa, and Gorillaz; a 2021 single, “Get Me Higher,” paired her with David Jackson. She also appeared on William Orbit’s 2022 album The Painter. For her next solo project she worked with an outside producer for the first time, traveling to Los Angeles to record with Rostam, formerly of Vampire Weekend. The resulting album, Euphoric, balanced introspective passages with club-driven exuberance and surfaced in 2023.
