Based in Vancouver, the indie pop outfit GIGI crafts songs featuring pop hooks reminiscent of Ellie Greenwich, along with gentle harmonies between male and female voices and old-school production techniques that evoke the School as well as Saturday Looks Good to Me. While more than a dozen musicians, among them Rose Melberg and Karl Blau, lent their talents to the project's inaugural album, the heart of GIGI lies in the partnership of Nick Krgovich, previously recognized through his efforts with P:ano and No Kids, and producer Colin Stewart. Stewart, after acquiring a pair of vintage plate reverbs in 2005, suggested to Krgovich that they pursue recordings in the vein of Phil Spector. This led to multiple sessions captured live without overdubs, which after three years yielded the material for GIGI's first long-player, Maintenant. Tomlab put out the album during January 2010.
