Haywood came together in Philadelphia during 1992, consisting of Ted Pauly, Rob Viola, Jeff Paretchan, Ariel Serbin, and Danny Barria. Drawing influence from Archers of Loaf, Pavement, and the Replacements, the group crafted their distinctive approach blending melody with complexity, issuing several singles on different labels. Following their move to New York City in 1997, Magwheel Records put out the band's first album, Model for a Monument, in 1998, and The Self-Starter Foundation issued Men Call Him Mister one year later. The group disbanded in 2000 prior to the release of their planned third album, We Are Amateurs, You and I.
