Not to be confused with the platinum-selling indie rock group that rose during the early 2000s or with any of the lesser-known acts sharing the name across different eras and regions, the death metal band Incubus originated in Metairie, Louisiana. Brothers Francis Howard, who handled guitar and vocals, and Moyses Howard established the group in 1986 shortly after emigrating from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They initially worked with local bassist Scot LaTour and later Mark Levenia to issue two albums on the Incubus name: Serpent Temptation in 1988 and Beyond the Unknown in 1990. Both records displayed notable intensity along with unexpectedly solid production values, yet they failed to bring wider recognition, prompting the outfit to enter an extended dormant period. During that time Francis made occasional appearances as a guest vocalist, contributing to Cannibal Corpse's "Skull Full of Maggots" and Sepultura's "Stronger Than Hate." When the Howard siblings elected to revive their project in the late 1990s, they adopted the moniker Opprobrium to sidestep potential conflicts with the younger and more prominent band of the same name. Their first release under this new identity, the 2000 LP Discerning Forces, emerged as a Christian death metal effort tracked in Brazil with assistance from bassist André Luiz and second guitarist Luiz Carlos.
