Origin: U.S.A
Jay Beckenstein, an alto saxophonist who occasionally turned to soprano, established the enduring crossover jazz group Spyro Gyra in 1974 and guided its direction across more than twenty-five years of activity. Raised amid music—his mother performed opera while his father collected jazz—he first picked up the saxophone at seven and soon participated in school ensembles that mixed jazz with R&B. Once high school ended, Beckenstein relocated to Buffalo alongside keyboardist Jeremy Wall; there he pursued formal studies at SUNY-Buffalo. The pair began booking their own shows throughout the city, and those performances gradually coalesced into Spyro Gyra, whose lengthy run proved both prolific and commercially rewarding. Beckenstein waited until 2000 before releasing Eye Contact, his debut solo project, an album populated by numerous guests.
