New York's Lawrence crafts an eclectic yet melody-driven strain of soul-pop propelled by keyboards and brass, anchored by the sibling duo of keyboardist and chief songwriter Clyde Lawrence alongside vocalist Gracie Lawrence. The act first surfaced amid New York City's club circuit in 2015, attracting listeners and climbing the charts once they unveiled the 2016 EP Breakfast followed by the 2018 studio set Living Room. After issuing a pair of live documents titled The Live Album, Pt. 1 & Pt. 2, the group teamed with singer and producer Jon Bellion for the 2021 release Hotel TV and the 2024 album Family Business.

Film director Marc Lawrence's offspring, Clyde and Gracie, developed their musical partnership from childhood onward. Clyde took up piano near age three and composed his initial tune by six, a piece later featured in his father's 2000 film Miss Congeniality. Seven years afterward he supplied the score for another paternal project, the Hugh Grant comedy Music and Lyrics. Gracie, likewise steeped in performance traditions, reached Broadway at twelve in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs. Lawrence coalesced while Clyde attended Brown University, where he assembled a funk-and-soul ensemble that Gracie augmented during campus visits. The pair began co-writing material, formally launching the band in 2015. Extensive touring ensued, leading to the 2016 debut EP Breakfast, helmed by producer Eric Krasno of Lettuce, Soulive, and Tedeschi Trucks Band, and boasting contributions from Adam Deitch of Lettuce, Cory Henry of Snarky Puppy, and Maurice "Mobetta" Brown of Tedeschi Trucks Band. The project circulated widely online and expanded the group's following. An acoustic counterpart, Breakfast: Unscrambled (Acoustic Sessions), appeared in 2018, the same year Living Room arrived and secured a Top Ten digital-chart placement.

Throughout 2019 Lawrence shared stages with singer-songwriter Jon Bellion and issued the standalone single "Casualty," produced by Bellion. During COVID-19 restrictions they assembled earlier concert tapes into the two volumes of The Live Album. Aligning with Bellion's Beautiful Mind Records, the ensemble delivered its third studio album, Hotel TV, in 2021; Bellion produced the set, which also spotlighted his own vocal turn plus a guest appearance by Brasstracks. In 2024 the band returned with Family Business, again co-produced alongside Bellion and led by the single "Guy I Used to Be," while simultaneously offering the companion collection Acoustic-ish that recast their catalog in spare, acoustic arrangements.
