Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen

From his early teens, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen earned widespread recognition as a virtuoso bassist who concentrated chiefly on bop settings. Among the wave of exceptional European players who surfaced in the 1960s, he first concentrated on piano studies before taking up the bass at fourteen with Danish ensembles. At seventeen he turned down an invitation from Count Basie to join his orchestra, yet he maintained a steady presence as the house bassist at Club Montmartre and as a member of the Danish Radio Orchestra.

Throughout the 1960s, visiting American jazz musicians performing in Scandinavia routinely requested his participation, resulting in collaborations with Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Roland Kirk, Dexter Gordon, Bud Powell, and Albert Ayler, although the session with the latter proved less fruitful. During the 1970s he appeared regularly in a duo alongside Kenny Drew. From the middle of that decade he also served as an occasional member of the Oscar Peterson Trio while issuing several leader dates on SteepleChase; he further contributed to numerous Pablo Records sessions across varied formats. His career continued without interruption until his sudden passing in April 2005 at the age of fifty-eight.
