Bringing a satirical edge and character-driven flair to dance music that fuses indie pop with hip-hop influences, the Los Angeles-based Oliver Tree works as a vocalist, producer, and sketch comedian. His profile surged after "When I'm Down" spread virally in 2016, paving the way for the 2020 full-length debut Ugly Is Beautiful, which registered on Billboard charts. The following year saw the arrival of the collaborative EP Welcome to the Internet alongside Little Big, while his second album Cowboy Tears landed in 2022 and reached number seven on the Alternative Albums chart. Another standalone success, the 2022 single "Miss You" with German DJ/producer Robin Schulz, previewed the third album Alone in a Crowd, issued in 2023.
Born in Santa Cruz, California, Tree first appeared in October 2016 as a guest on hometown EDM artist Getter's single "Forget It." That month also marked his initial team-up with DJ Whethan on the compassion-themed track "When I'm Down," which accumulated millions of streams and turned viral. Atlantic Records soon signed him, leading to the mid-2017 solo releases "Welcome to L.A.," "All I Got," and "Cheapskate." A second Whethan collaboration, "Enemy," surfaced in September 2017, followed in early 2018 by Tree's own "Upside Down." Both cuts featured on the Alien Boy EP, issued that February via Atlantic. Further singles arrived quickly, including "Movement" and the rock-tinged "Hurt."
In 2019 Tree issued tracks such as "Fuck" and "Miracle Man," with the latter appearing on the EP Do You Feel Me? His debut album Ugly Is Beautiful followed in June 2020, compiling earlier material alongside new cuts like "Cash Machine," "Let Me Down," and "Bury Me Alive." Ahead of its 2021 deluxe edition, he dropped the single "Out of Ordinary" in February. Later came Welcome to the Internet with Russian ravers Little Big, highlighted by the hit "Turn It Up" featuring Tommy Cash. February 2022 brought the lightly country-inflected sophomore set Cowboy Tears, which included production and songwriting input from Whethan, Casey Mattson, Travis Barker, and others; it peaked at number seven on the Rock and Alternative Albums charts and number 60 on the Billboard 200.
Tree joined forces with DJ/producer Robin Schulz that year on "Miss You," a track that climbed to number 84 on the Billboard Hot 100 and introduced the 2023 full-length Alone in a Crowd. Consistent with his conceptual and meta-satirical bent, the album cast him in the invented role of fashion designer Cornelius Cummings. He next linked with David Guetta for the standalone single "Here We Go Again," then unveiled another Alone in a Crowd preview in the bass-heavy alt-pop track "Bounce."
