Rebeca Mauleón stands out among leading Latin jazz figures on the West Coast through her combined roles as educator, producer, and performer. Her stage career opened with accompaniments for established jazz figures including Steve Windwood and Carlos "Patato" Valdez. Recognition as an emerging arranger followed from contributions to Tito Puente's Goza Mi Timbal, Windwood's Junction Seven, and Valdez's Ritmo y Candela. Further associations with top-tier Latin artists such as Israel "Cachao" López, Sheila E., and Carlos Santana coincided with the launch of her instructional publications. Salsa Guidebook appeared in 1993 and The Latin Real Book in 1997, each becoming foundational references within expanding Latin jazz circles. 101 Montunos arrived in 1999 during her peak tenure as musical director for Mickey Hart's Planet Drum ensemble. Engagements with Hart placed her before stadium audiences and on nationally televised programs including Conan O'Brien and Live! with Regis and Kathy Lee. The Planet Drum affiliation also connected her with elite percussionists who later served as ongoing collaborators. Those associations supported her 1999 solo debut Round Trip. Subsequent releases Latin Fire in 2004 and Descarga en California in 2006 likewise showcased premier Latin jazz personnel such as Giovanni Hidalgo, Orestes Vilató, Armando Peraza, and additional notables. Acclaim for these recordings positioned Mauleón as a sought-after clinician, delivering workshops and master classes on both traditional and contemporary Latin music styles worldwide.
