Drawing from the sounds of As I Lay Dying, Norma Jean, and Every Time I Die, the Boston metalcore group Vanna secured a deal with Epitaph Records in fall 2005 after forming barely a year earlier. The lineup at the time featured Joe Bragel handling vocals, Nick Lambert on guitar and vocals, Evan Pharmakis also on guitar and vocals, Brandon Davis behind the drums, and Shawn Marquis on bass, with their songs shifting between melodic singing and visceral growling. Personal reasons prompted the band to part ways with Bragel in February 2006, after which Chris Preece stepped in as the new vocalist. Their first EP, The Search Party Never Came, arrived in June 2006. That summer brought extensive national touring, including several shows alongside labelmates Escape the Fate, before the group headed to a Seattle studio in the fall to work with producer Matt Bayles, known for his work with Mastodon and Norma Jean. The sessions yielded the full-length Curses, which emerged in April 2007 and received support through spring performances with Lovehatehero. Epitaph issued the follow-up A New Hope in 2009, while 2011 saw the release of both And They Came Baring Bones and The Few and the Far Between on Sacramento-based Artery Recordings. Pure Noise Records put out the band’s fifth album, the Will Putney-produced Void, in 2014. An EP of covers titled ALT appeared the next year, and All Hell followed as a new studio album in 2016.
