Biography
From the early 2010s, Argentinian experimental cellist and composer Violeta García has operated within free improvisation, drawing primary inspiration from French double bassist and European Women Improvising Group participant Joëlle Léandre. Born in Buenos Aires in 1990, García began cello studies at eight and pursued formal training at the Astor Piazzolla Conservatory, the Manuel de Falla Higher Conservatory of Music, and the National University of the Arts. This intensive classical grounding later prompted a decisive shift; after attending a workshop led by Léandre, she redirected her practice toward expressive, contemporary compositional approaches. In 2011 she joined the nine-cellist collective ARRE! for the recording of their sombre, mournful self-titled album. The following year she participated in the one-off Bosnnia project Ferias y Fiestas de la Posguerra, performing in a quintet that layered traditional Balkan idioms over intermittent Latin and post-rock rhythms. A month afterward, a discordant avant-jazz concert with Buenos Aires-based Peruvian flutist Camilo Ángeles was released as the live album El Espesor del Sueño.
In 2015 García co-established the TVL label alongside Ángeles and bassist Carlos Quebrada to support kindred Latin American experimental artists. That year she also took part in an improv residency in Bariloche led by Ernesto Jodos and Oscar Edelstein. She rejoined Ángeles in 2016 as a member of his Nicotina es Primavera ensemble for the Buh Records album Animal Cerámico. Although her contributions to Marco Sanguinetti’s 2017 piano album 9 yielded a comparatively accessible result, her concurrent work with Quebrada produced the chaotic, eccentric self-titled debut EP by BlancoTeta. Around the same period the duo, under the name Monótonos Truenos, issued the equally experimental yet contrasting album Infierno Piso 6. Before year’s end García also released the duo EP Lana de Vidrio with oboist Juliana Gaona.
Her first solo album, Acero, appeared in February 2018, mixed and mastered by Quebrada. The same year saw a second Nicotina es Primavera release, the collaborative EP El devenir del Río with Pia Hernandez, and significant contributions to experimental jazz drummer Andrés Elstein’s Elstein6: Las Formas Cambian. García’s performing calendar expanded further when a 2018 Basel appearance with Naama Tsabar earned her a 2019 residency invitation at New York’s Art Omi. Despite additional boundary-pushing recordings in 2020 with Javier Areal Vélez and Arborescroma, she continued supplementing her income through traditional tango session work. In 2021 she relocated to Bern, Switzerland, to pursue an M.A. in Music Composition Creative Practice and completed two notable collaborations: Uanmortaim with New York alto saxophonist Chris Pitsiokos and the Kit Records album Absence with traditional Korean flutist Dasom Baek.
