Born in Mina Gerais and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Vitor Gonçalves has established himself in New York as a pianist, accordionist, composer, and arranger whose personal approach fuses the diverse traditions of his homeland with forward-leaning jazz. Beyond directing his own quartet, he has toured extensively as a member of the Anat Cohen Tentet and collaborated with Vinicius Cantuaria, Anthony Wilson, and Yotam Silberstein. His first recording under his own name appeared on Sunnyside in 2017.
Gonçalves began formal study on acoustic guitar—the instrument most associated with Brazilian players—and initially explored rock before encountering the depth of the classic Brazilian repertoire as a teenager. Through that discovery he immersed himself in bossa nova, samba, MPB, choro, baião, and jazz. When an unused keyboard his father had bought for his sister became available, he shifted his focus to piano. A decisive formative chapter unfolded during the nine years he spent inside the workshops and groups led by Itiberê Zwarg, the bassist long associated with Hermeto Pascoal. The rigorous rehearsal and performance demands there amounted to an accelerated education in what Pascoal termed “universal music,” prompting Gonçalves to form Bamboo, an ensemble of fellow participants that presented his own compositions and arrangements.
While working with Zwarg, he connected with the American guitarist Todd Neufeld, who had come to one of the workshops; the two musicians exchanged ideas and professional contacts. Shortly afterward Gonçalves secured a place in the touring band of iconic singer Maria Bethânia, remaining with her for four years of international travel. A New York engagement arranged by Neufeld—featuring bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron—crystallized his determination to relocate and concentrate on jazz. He moved in 2012 and entered the jazz performance master’s program at City College of New York, where his writing expanded under the influence of contemporary classical composers, avant-garde jazz, and free-improvisation artists.
At the same time he began collaborating with New York musicians who shared an affinity for Brazilian music yet lacked deep grounding in its idioms, an experience that led him to prioritize the integration of his own background into new work. He now maintains four concurrent projects. On accordion he appears with the five-piece traditional choro ensemble Regional de NY and with the trio SanfoNYa Brasileira, alongside Eduardo Belo on upright bass and Vanderlei Pereira on drums, merging jazz with forró, choro, and frevo. On piano and electric keyboards he performs with Bamboo, a funky electro-acoustic world-dance group, and with his own jazz quartet featuring Neufeld on guitar, Morgan on bass, and drummer Dan Weiss. Following his signing to Sunnyside Communications, that quartet recorded his self-titled debut, issued in January 2017; the album illustrates his synthesis of modern progressive and avant-garde jazz improvisation and composition with classical harmony, counterpoint, and Brazilian rhythmic and melodic materials.
